How it was composed
Follow the water, then the heart
Two dawn trips to the river with a handheld recorder gave the score its bed: lapping water, distant temple bells, one perfect oar creak that opens the film.
The love theme was written for a single bamboo flute after three fully orchestrated versions were muted — the director chose the barest take. Folk strings answer it only in the crossing scenes, never elsewhere.
River theme — minute by minute
Water and oar
Location recordings alone — the river introduces itself before any note.
Flute, unaccompanied
The love theme stated once, breath audible between phrases.
Folk strings answer
Two violins and a cello echo the phrase a third below, like banks of a river.
Bells and fade
Temple bells from the location tapes close the cue as the boat lands.
